Q. Welcome to XXI COPINAVAL.
A. Thank you. I am excited by such an international meeting in Uruguay. I think it is coming at an important moment. We have reached cross-roads and now we must discuss what is going on and how we should carefully make choices on how and why we do things and what changes are needed to improve our environmental impact.
Q. Yes, we indeed have that and many economic challenges to deal with. How do you see things developing in the near term?
A. I read a story book with my 6 year old daughter about a treasure at the end of a rainbow. In reflection I see that marine engineering is following a similar trajectory. At the start 200 years ago the industrial revolution created a shift from sailing ships with little environmental impact to the coal fired steamers, then in the last century steel ships powered by steam boilers and diesel engines became the norm. These ships linked our global economy and carried its tremendous growth at the cost of a big environmental impact. This has clouded the industrial sky. Now in the next few years under international pressure we move to zero emission ships powered by hybrid diesel-electric systems fitted with emission reduction devices or fuel cells. These green ships are only part of the treasure at the end of the rainbow.
Q. What other things are there?
A. A lot lies ahead of us. Besides the green commercial vessel and yacht designs that are emerging throughout the word. There is a world-wide study of marine energy utilization and conservation underway.
Q. Can you give some idea of the scope of this activity?
A. Lets talk of Marine Engineering and specifically marine propulsion. In addition to the work that has reduced diesel engine exhaust gas emissions; there is now a wider view that to achieve the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint, the diesel propulsion plant should be combined with alternate marine propulsion systems including:
• Wind and Solar Energy systems
• Electric propulsion systems
• Hybrid propulsion systems
• Clean thermal propulsion systems
• Fuel sources such as bio diesel from seaweed farms and methane gas from biomass etc
Q. What about other directions?
A. That is a complicated subject. Think back 25 years ago when the telephone required poles and wires for us to talk. Significant resources were used to create the land line phone system. Today we carry a cell phone and simply charge it each day. We will begin to see a similar shift where renewable energy from wind, and ocean waves and current will enter our lives like the cell phone.
Q. Interesting can you been more specific?
A. Imagine a simple device for harvesting the ocean energy from wind waves and currents. A few years ago they introduced an emergency torch, a flashlight that you could shake and it would light up. We have developed this type of technology that converts vibratory motion to electricity and priced in the range of $20.00 /unit. Imagine a sea blanket moving as the waves pass over it fitted with arrays of these chips to harvest energy from the ocean Things like this will come to pass as we seek clean and renewable energy.
Q. And?
A. As you understand we can approach this on a large scale. One example of this is the large diameter wind turbine set offshore in Denmark and the United Kingdom. That can provide the electricity for 2-3,000 homes from one turbine generator. The offshore installation of these wind turbines requires developing specialized marine equipment. They also require a lot of good ideas to maximize the benefits these wind turbines could be used to anchor wave extraction devices as well as securing seaweed farms that could replace corn for blending in bio diesel fuel.
Q. This means we change our marine education?
A. Yes and No. We probably will accomplish many things by mixing our students from different disciplines and having them work on these concepts as a muli-disciplinary team. In closing I hope the Copinaval organizers will provide the opportunity for the delegates to become more familiar with these emerging green energy technologies.

“COPINAVAL XXI va a tener un alto nivel académico”

Según destacó el Ing. Jorge Freiría, responsable académico del XXI COPINAVAL, ya han sido recibidos casi 150 resúmenes, con diferentes propuestas académicas y técnicas, para ser presentadas en el Congreso Panamericano de Ingeniería Naval a realizarse en octubre, en su vigésima-primera edición.

Actualmente, los autores de los resúmenes seleccionados, han comenzado a enviar sus trabajos, los que serán sometidos ante un comité evaluador.

“Estos evaluadores, de nivel internacional, trabajarán en pares para que podamos asegurar un muy buen nivel de los trabajos seleccionados”, señaló Freiría.

“Al COPINAVAL XXI vendrán participantes de Alemania, Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, España, Estados Unidos, Francia, Japón, México, Perú, Polonia, Uruguay y Venezuela. Como ven, las participaciones serán muy diversas y estamos seguros de que también, de alto nivel académico y técnico”, destacó Freiría.
